The International Cooperation in Nuclear Physics (ICNP) was established by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) in 2003, on the recommendation of C12 – Commission on Nuclear Physics, as Working Group 9 (WG9), with a mandate to address key issues in nuclear physics.

At the 34th IUPAP General Assembly, held in October 2025, ICNP was transformed from a Working Group into a Standing Committee under C12 – Commission on Nuclear Physics, continuing its work to foster international cooperation in the field.

The updated 2023 version of the IUPAP Report 41 ‘A Worldwide Perspective of Research And Research Facilities in Nuclear Physics by the IUPAP Working Group 9’ is now available here and can be downloaded here. The first part discusses briefly the most important science questions to be addressed in the coming ten years in the seven subfields of nuclear physics (Nuclear Structure, Nuclear Reactions, Nuclear Astrophysics, Hadronic Nuclear Physics, QCD and Quark Matter, Fundamental Symmetries, Applied Nuclear Science, Nuclear Power, and Nuclear Physics Facilities). The second part consists of a comprehensive description of almost 80 nuclear physics facilities worldwide.

Mission/Mandate

Provide a description of the landscape of key issues in Nuclear Science research sequentially for the next 10 to 20 years (IUPAP Report 41).
Produce and maintain a compendium of facilities existing or under development worldwide (IUPAP Report 41 and Addendum).
Establish a mapping of these facilities on to the scientific questions identified above.
Indicate the missing components that would have to be developed to provide an optimized, comprehensive network of international facilities.
Explore mechanisms and opportunities for enhancing international collaboration in nuclear science ( the establishment of ANPhA [Asia Nuclear Physics Association] and ALAFNA [Asociacion Latina Americana de Fisica Nuclear y Aplicaciones] with a nascent similar effort for Africa).
Identify the R/D projects that could benefit from an international joint enterprise.
Serve as a source of expert advise to governmental and intergovernmental organizations in connection with efforts to coordinate and promote nuclear science at the international level ( the OECD Global Science Forum Working Group on Nuclear Physics [2006-2008] ).
Serve as a forum for the discussion of future directions of nuclear science in the broadest sense (the IUPAP Nuclear Science Symposia).
Document the cross disciplinary impact of Nuclear Physics with its Nuclear Science Facilities and identify mechanisms for expanding (fostering) cross disciplinary research.
