WG3: Facilities for Condensed Matter Physics

Working Group 3 was formed initially by a resolution of the IUPAP Council and Chairs in September 1998 and its charge was then broadened at the recent Council meeting last October.

Charge to Working Group

The Working Group will spawn and oversee committees that will act to:

  • promote international collaboration for planning, construction and exploitation of facilities for condensed matter. This will include the need for new sources and upgrades to existing sources, instrumentation requirements, availability access, and long range planning;
  • organize international meetings for exchange of information on future plans for regional facilities and the formulation of advice for joint studies and uses;
  • organize international workshops for the study of problems related to large facilities and to foster research and development on necessary technology.

The WG3: FCMP’s first effort will be to appoint an International Committee on the Future of Neutron Sources. Its members will include members of IUPAP Commissions plus representatives of regional user groups, appropriate labs, developing countries, and other involved organizations. The plan, in the following year, is to set up a similar committee, the International Committee on the Future of Electromagnetic Radiation Sources, which would be concerned with synchrotron light sources, free electron lasers, etc. A third committee on medium-sized facilities might be set up during the third year.

Subgroups

WG4: Particle and Nuclear Astrophysics and Gravitation International Committee (PaNAGIC)

Working Group 4 was created by IUPAP in 1998 to support international exchange of ideas and help in the convergence of the international scientific community in the large scale activity in the emerging field of particle and nuclear astrophysics, gravitation and cosmology.

Charge to Working Group

  • study of basic constituents of matter and their interactions by non-accelerator means;
  • study of the sources, acceleration mechanism and propagation of high energy particles in the Universe;
  • study of nuclear and particle properties and processes of astrophysical interest in the Universe;
  • study of gravity, including the detection and the astrophysical sources of gravitational waves.

The Committee has 17 members, selected primarily on the basis of intellectual leadership and representing the major components of the filed. One member is appointed by each of C4, C11, C12 and C19. One of the members acts as a link to AC2.

Sub-fields

A sub-panel will be appointed by PaNAGIC in a particular sub-field when this is considered to be useful in promoting convergence of large international projects. Two such sub-fields have already been identified:

WG6: Working Group on Energy

The Working Group on Energy was mandated by IUPAP in 2003.

Charge to Working Group

  • to list the various sources of useful energy and discuss how each can be expected to supply needed energy over the next 50-100 years;
  • to discusss the advantages and drawbacks of each of these sources;
  • to identify the energy needs of countries around the world and discuss different approaches that would be useful for each;
  • to make recommendations on specific areas where physics-based research and development is needed;
  • to work with ICSU so that IUPAP’s efforts enhance its more general studies;
  • to prepare a paper on the findings of the working group and have this ready to present at the IUPAP General Assembly in 2005.

Non-Technical Summary

WG8: Nanoscience Working Group

Nanoscience is a rapidly expanding field affecting a number of areas of physics. It was felt that there was no necessity to create a new commission in this area because at least 9 commissions are strongly involved in this field. The Working Group will examine the connections between nanoscience and the various fields of physics and determine whether and how IUPAP can facilitate its development.

Charge to Working Group

Particular objectives of the working group are the following:

  • examine how nanoscience is fitting into established IUPAP sponsored conferences;
  • are there any steps that could be taken to improve the coupling between the cold atom and the core nanoscience communities?;
  • address whether and how IUPAP can stimulate the development of nanoscience. For example, would a conference sponsored by multiple IUPAP commissions devoted solely to nanoscience be desirable?

Organisation

The working group will consist of one member from each of the following IUPAP commissions, to be selected by the respective commission chair by no later than Nov. 30, 2004. It will be chaired by W. van Wijngaarden, chair of commission 15 on Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics.
