On March 7, 2025, the city of Bahía Blanca, Argentina (population 350,000) and neighboring towns suffered a severe climate catastrophe, with more than 300 mm of rain falling in just 8 hours. The flooding caused catastrophic damage across the region, particularly to the Department of Physics (DF) of the National University of the South (UNS).

The experimental laboratories, located in the basement, were completely submerged in sewage-contaminated water for several days. Equipment acquired and maintained over many years deteriorated irreparably in a matter of hours. As a result, most scientific and academic activities have come to a halt, directly impacting the local community and indirectly affecting the broader physics community in Argentina.

The Argentine Physics Association (AFA) has reached out to IUPAP to seek support. The UNS has opened a dedicated account for donations to help rebuild and restore the Department.
