The International Organization on Medical Physics, IOMP, was established in 1953. It acts as Affiliated Commission 4 (AC4) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics since 2015.

Medical Physics ensures the quality of imaging and treatment procedures while minimizing radiation risks.

Medical physicists are highly qualified professionals, with an advanced postgraduate university degree followed by specialized clinical training in one or more medical physics disciplines, such as radiation oncology, diagnostic and interventional radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation protection.

The International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) represents about 30,000 medical physicists worldwide. The mission of IOMP is to advance medical physics practice by disseminating scientific and technical information, fostering the educational and professional development of medical physicists, and promoting the highest quality medical services for patients.

IOMP collaborates with the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) on various topics of mutual interest. The IUPAP Young Scientist Awards on Medical Physics have been established and funded by the IUPAP and awarded by the IOMP as the IUPAP affiliated International Commission on Medical Physics. The IUPAP Young Scientist Awardees for 2018 and 2019 were presented at the 24th International Conference on Medical Physics (ICMP).

24th International Conference on Medical Physics

IUPESM World Congress on Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering 2021

IUPAP has sponsored major Medical Physics events including the World Congress in Prague (2018) and ICMP in Chile (September 8-11, 2019, Santiago).

Mission/Mandate

Medical physics is a branch of physics applied in health care.

The aims of the AC4 are:

  • to advance medical physics science and practice;
  • to strengthen the interaction with other branches of physics;
  • to foster the educational and professional development of medical physicists
  • to promote the highest quality medical services for patients.
