The IUPAP President Michel Spiro congratulates Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger, on receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics 2022 “for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science”.

Dear Alain, John, Anton,

Let me congratulate you, on behalf of the international physics community, on receiving the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics. It is a well deserved and long due recognition! I am proud to notice that Alain’s achievements have been already recognized by our Union, back in 1987 with IUPAP’s International Commission for Optics Prize. Your pioneering experiments have paved the way for new discoveries in quantum information that will have an enormous societal impact. In this regard, I am pleased to inform you that the IUPAP General Assembly has recently approved a resolution to create a new Working Group on “Quantum Information Science and Technology”. The new Working Group complements the domains of expertise covered by IUPAP’s current 14 Working Groups and 25 Commissions and Affiliated Commissions. Finally be sure that your fundamental advances in Physics and their potential applications will be duly advertised during the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD) in 2022 and 2023 and during the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology in 2025 that IUPAP is supporting.

Once again, congratulations!

Sincerely,
Michel Spiro
IUPAP President
Chair of the Steering Committee of IYBSSD
